Old German Currency


Before the euro age, the old German currency was the Deutsche Mark, or DEM.

The old Deutche Mark is in fact considered to be the cornerstone of the euro. Partly this is due to the sterling reputation that the old German Central bank (Bundesbank) had on keeping tabs on inflation and their currency stable.

Much of the weight of the current European Central Bank is in the legacy of the old Bundesbank, and many of the same German central bankers are calling the shots in the new European Central Bank.

As the the last part of the Maastrich Treaty (of euro currency history), the DEM notes and coins were replaced by euro notes and coins on January 1st, 2002.
